“LEGEND OF THE WILD WOMAN” - BY ARTIST JOE BOB, 1993 - This wonderful piece is by local Nanaimo artist Joe Bob. It measures 30” wide by 40” high. The legend of the wild women is as follows; Darkness covered the earth and the Raven was fed up. He could not even see himself, his shiny plumage was indistinguishable from the ever black days and nights. One day he found out an old man had a bright ball of light hidden in his house. So, he changed himself into a salal leaf - when the old mans daughter picked the salal berries she ate some fruit - the leaf (the Raven) placed himself in her hand and she ate him with the fruit. Once inside her body he changed into an unborn child. He was reborn as the old mans grandson. The grandson was Grandpa’s favorite - when he wanted to play with the light Grandpa could not refuse him. As soon as the Grandson go the light he quickly changed into the Raven and flew out the smoke hole with the ball of light. The daughter cried out to the Eagle for help and he chased the Raven - the Raven dropped the ball of light - the two big pieces that broke off made the sun and the moon - the smaller pieces the stars. The daughter had been odd ever since the Raven had entered her body - her behavior was often wild and out of character. Once her son changed back into the Raven - she became known as the “Wild Woman.” The Wild Woman symbol is worn by people who can face great challenges and accept their role., looking to the goodness that can come out of a bad situation.
